Ram Air Replication

Since its inception in 2003 Dyna Pro Ltd has established itself as the leading manufacturer of Chassis Dynamometers in the UK, the brothers of Kevin & Mark Dent have a reputation for thinking ‘outside the box’ designing cutting edge dynamometer systems that achieve unrivalled control over the vehicle being tested. This commitment to pushing the boundaries of engine tuning has lead to Dyna Pro’s latest development.

Ram-air simulation on dynamometer test beds has always been an area of misrepresentation and guesswork, figures seemingly plucked out the air regarding percentage power increases and fuelling compensation for the Ram-air effect at high speeds have always been suspect, until now

Dyna Pro is one of the first Dynamometer manufacturers in the world to develop a dedicated fully closed loop Ram-air simulation system for the motorcycle industry.

The problem associated with a fixed speed fan, or an un-calibrated variable speed fan, is the effect it can have on the fuelling requirements of the bike on test. To much air entering the air box system at low speeds will cause the tuner to over fuel the bike, and at high speeds the opposite can occur, or high speed lean-out. Both of these facts can contribute to rideability problems, an unforeseen loss in engine performance or engine damage.

Special high velocity / high volume variable speed fans with advanced control systems were developed to simulate the growing needs for engine tuners to be able to replicate the air velocity and air box intake pressures associated to reproduce real world riding conditions.

The key to simulating Ram-air is the understanding of what is occurring in the air box intake system. Using information obtained from extensive real-time data logging from both Road and track motorcycles, the air box pressure is recorded throughout all road speeds. The Ram-air simulation system then matches this pressure at the air box intake with data obtained form the track.

This system allows the engine tuner to precisely map the fuelling requirement for any given speed and in any given gear. It also gives a quantified number for the effect that Forced Air Induction through the intake system has on the real world Horsepower numbers.

In addition to the advantages of being able to simulate air box intake pressures, the system is also the perfect cooling system. With the ability to precisely cool any bike on test and with the addition of a water temperature sensor the system will maintain the optimum engine temperature for extended periods of time, which is ideal for endurance testing and achieving consistent dyno results.
